Meet Dr. Jason Shelton

Dr. Jason Shelton has called Arlington home for nearly two decades. As a longtime community leader, educator, and volunteer, he has dedicated his career to bringing people together and building stronger, more equitable communities. At the University of Texas at Arlington, Dr. Shelton serves as Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for African American Studies, where he’s spent nearly 18 years mentoring students and fostering dialogue about leadership, service, and inclusion. He currently serves on the Boards for the Arlington Museum of Art and the Levitt Pavillion. Dr. Shelton also chaired the Arlington Unity Council for five years. This official board/commission reported to City Council and was designed to promote equity, opportunity, and community across the city. Rooted in faith, family, and service, Dr. Shelton and his wife, Sarah, a psychologist who serves Veterans in North Texas, met as college students and have been proud to raise their two daughters, Layla and Chloe, here in Arlington. Whether volunteering with Mission Arlington, supporting youth programs at their church and local organizations, or connecting with neighbors at events, Dr. Shelton believes in the power of community to make Arlington an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

With over 17 million annual visitors to our entertainment district and a growing population, Arlington must plan ahead to ease congestion and improve mobility. Jason supports energy-efficient, forward-thinking, cost-effective transportation solutions that make it easier and safer to get around — connecting residents, businesses, and visitors across Arlington and the metroplex.
